First National Oral Health Policy
The Brasil Sorridente program is considered the first National Oral Health Policy that was created with the aim of treating the oral health of Brazilians. This program made it possible for the most needy population to have access to dental treatments.
Before the program, most Brazilians did not have access to these services, as the cost was well above what they could afford. Most of the time, they only went to the dentist in cases of extreme need.
Thanks to Brasil Sorridente, today there are numerous dental treatments that are made available by the SUS (Unified Health System) and are available to everyone.
What is the objective of the Brasil Sorridente program?
The main objective of the program is to reorganize the qualification and practice of the services that are offered. For this, they gathered a series of oral health actions that are offered free of charge to all Brazilians.
Check out the main lines of action of Brasil Sorridente:
- Restructuring of Primary Care in oral health, with the creation of oral health teams;
- Qualification and increase in specialized care, based on the creation of the Center for Dental Specialties (CEO's) and the Regional Dental Prosthesis Laboratories.
Who can join?
As dental services are available at SUS, anyone, regardless of age group or socioeconomic status, can participate in the program.
Just schedule an appointment at the Dental Specialties Center (CEO's), or if you don't have one close to your home, look for a nearest health center (UBS) and find out about scheduling an appointment.
How to participate?
To be able to make an appointment, you must go to a CEO's or a nearest health center (UBS) and present the documents.
The documents can be either the RG or the driver's license and it is also necessary to present the SUS card.
If you do not have a SUS card, you will need to issue a new one. This process can be done at the health center itself and is ready on time. If you prefer, you can also issue over the internet.
All you have to do is access your city's “Citizen Portal” website, fill in your details and issue a new SUS card.

Why is it so important to take care of oral health?
Because when you take care of your oral health, you avoid inflammatory or infectious processes that can cause more serious illnesses.
The most important thing is to perform a good brushing. If the person does not have good oral hygiene, the residues that remain can cause gingivitis, bad breath, cavities, tartar and can even lead to tooth loss.
Avoiding the intake of sweets, such as candies, chocolates and gum is highly recommended by dentists, as excessive consumption of these foods can lead to cavities and, if left untreated, it can become something more serious.
Finally, we recommend doing a deeper cleaning with the dentist at least twice a year.
Don't leave it to take care of your oral health later! Check if your municipality participates in the Brasil Sorridente program and start your treatment.
