Step by step below on how to open a MEI
- Enter the Entrepreneur's Portal, website of the gov.br platform
- Click on “I want to be MEI” and after that on the option “Formalize”
- You must create an account in the “gov.br” system or, if you already have one, log in with your CPF and password;
- After that, it is necessary to provide personal information such as Identity Card number, CPF, Income Tax declaration number, home address and contact telephone number;
- Then, you will have to choose what your activities will be, the trade name of your company and inform the place where you will work, for example, from home, via the internet, at a business address, among other things;
- At the end, check that all the data you provided are correct, fill in the statements that the government requests and finalize your registration.
After all this process, the opening of your company is really over and your work is officially regular with the Federal Government.
In this way, other bodies begin to see you as a new legal entity in the labor market. You can also issue the Individual Microentrepreneur Condition Certificate (CCMEI).
This is the document that proves your entire status as a micro-entrepreneur, bringing the number of the National Register of Legal Entities (CNPJ) and registration with the Board of Trade.
Who can open a MEI?
First, opening the MEI is available to virtually everyone, with the exception of retirees and pensioners.
In addition, those who have professions regulated by bodies such as the Council of Medicine, Nursing, Psychology and others, cannot open the MEI to work in that same area.
That is, a doctor cannot open a MEI to work with medicine, but he can open a MEI for a company operating in another branch, such as a distributor of food products.

- Have a maximum revenue of R$81 thousand per year, that is, R$6,750 per month;
- Not having a partner or being a holder, or administrator of another company. Then that must be your only business;

- Being a native Brazilian or a foreigner with a permanent visa
