As it is a state tax, IPVA rules are defined according to the interests of each state, with no single standard for all states.
Therefore, there are three main ways to issue the IPVA slip:
- The DMV website
- The Treasury Secretariat (Sefaz) portal or
- The website of a specific bank that is affiliated with the state.
For example, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, all slips and payment slips are issued through the website of Banco Bradesco, the bank accredited by the state government for these operations.
How to issue IPVA 2024 bills
To issue the IPVA 2024 invoice is very simple, just follow the step by step below:
- Access the Detran or Treasury Department website in your state;
- If you have difficulty finding it, search for “Detran” or “Secretaria da Fazenda + UF”, replacing “UF” with the abbreviation of your state;
- Do a search for IPVA;
- Click on “payment”;
- Inform the Renavam, vehicle license plate, CPF and other information requested;
- Issue the payment slip.
Okay, now just pay online through your bank or print and take it to a bank branch or lottery house.
Do not forget that like all taxes, if there is a delay in payment, there will be interest and fines.
Who is exempt from IPVA?
Before addressing the issue of exemption in each state, we need to remember that there are already profiles of drivers and vehicles that are exempt from paying IPVA. Are they:

Cash or installments, which option to choose?
Before issuing the payment slips, the taxpayer needs to decide whether to pay the IPVA in cash or in installments.
It is worth repeating that each state has its own rules, but as a rule, almost all of them allow the installment of the tribute in up to 5 installments.
For those who prefer to pay in cash, discounts can range from 3% to 9%, which could end up offsetting the increase that IPVA suffered in 2024.
Each taxpayer needs to analyze their financial reserves and choose the option that best fits their family budget.
What is the IPVA
The IPVA (Tax on Motor Vehicle Ownership) is a tax instituted in 1986 and charged in all states of the federation, in addition to the Federal District.
From the tax collected, 20% is destined for Fundeb (Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Basic Education), a fund created to promote the financing of public basic education.
The remainder of the amount is distributed equally between the municipality and the state in which the vehicle is licensed.
It is worth noting that the IPVA is a mandatory tax, and non-payment can generate a series of tax and administrative sanctions for the vehicle owner.
